A delicious recipe for a classic chocolate cake
Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 1 and 3/4 cups (220g) all-purpose flour
- 1 and 1/2 cups (300g) granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
- 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) boiling water
For the Frosting:
- 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 3 and 1/2 cups (440g) powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup (45g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy cream
Instructions
For the Cake:
Preheat the oven and prepare the pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans or line them with parchment paper circles.
Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Combine wet ingredients: In another large bowl, beat the eggs, then add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Add boiling water: Stir in the boiling water (the batter will be thin, but this is normal). Mix until the batter is smooth and well combined.
Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
Cool: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Assemble the Cake:
Level the cakes: If necessary, level the tops of the cakes with a knife or cake leveller.
Frost the cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting over the top. Place the second cake layer on top, and spread frosting over the top and sides of the cake.
Decorate: Decorate the cake as desired. You can add chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or any other decorations you like.
Serve: Slice and enjoy your delicious homemade chocolate cake!
Tips:
- Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature before you start baking.
- Don't overmix the batter once you combine the wet and dry ingredients; mix until just combined.
- If you want an extra moist cake, you can add a teaspoon of instant coffee to the boiling water.
Enjoy your baking!
