A delicious recipe for a classic chocolate cake

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 and 3/4 cups (220g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) boiling water

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 3 and 1/2 cups (440g) powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup (45g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy cream

Instructions

For the Cake:

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare the pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans or line them with parchment paper circles.

  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Combine wet ingredients: In another large bowl, beat the eggs, then add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.

  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. Add boiling water: Stir in the boiling water (the batter will be thin, but this is normal). Mix until the batter is smooth and well combined.

  6. Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

  7. Cool: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

For the Frosting:
  1. Beat the butter: In a large bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy and smooth, about 2 minutes.

  2. Add the dry ingredients: Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until well combined.

  3. Add remaining ingredients: Add the salt, vanilla extract, and heavy cream. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat until the frosting is light and fluffy about 3-4 minutes.

Assemble the Cake:

  1. Level the cakes: If necessary, level the tops of the cakes with a knife or cake leveller.

  2. Frost the cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting over the top. Place the second cake layer on top, and spread frosting over the top and sides of the cake.

  3. Decorate: Decorate the cake as desired. You can add chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or any other decorations you like.

  4. Serve: Slice and enjoy your delicious homemade chocolate cake!

Tips:

  • Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature before you start baking.
  • Don't overmix the batter once you combine the wet and dry ingredients; mix until just combined.
  • If you want an extra moist cake, you can add a teaspoon of instant coffee to the boiling water.

Enjoy your baking!
